COMMISSIONING A PIECE

Got an itch that needs scratching, an idea thats been bubbling away…?

Well, whatever it maybe, however big or small, mad or mundane I’d love talk about it.

Commissioning furniture is the most exciting journey, where you get to bring an idea to life, with my experience and expertise guiding you through the process enhancing and developing your ideas along the way.

Whatever you have in mind, I’ll work closely with you throughout the process to ensure that in every detail your piece is perfect.

This is the bit of the job I enjoy the most, so no stone will be left unturned, no corner curbed and no effort spared to make sure you get the best possible result.

Keep reading to learn more about the how the process works.

PART ONE: THE BRIEF

The process starts with a meeting to ascertain what you have in mind. This can be in situ if the piece is location specific, or elsewhere if not.

We’ll use the meeting to get a grip on the specifics of size, function, surroundings that will define the piece.
I’ll also look to get a handle on your aesthetic preferences, to ensure the piece fits your taste and your home.
(and don’t worry at all if you don’t feel well versed in design, we can very much communicate in pictures. absolutely no lingo required)

PART TWO: DESIGN

I’ll then take all this information away and start designing your piece.
Initially through rough & detailed hand drawn sketches (something i love) and perspective drawings, i’ll then go on to produce digital 3D models to bring the idea to life.

Having presented you with 3 designs, from which you will hopefully select your favourite which we’ll go on to refine and develop the idea (don’t worry if your perfect piece isn’t in those three initial offerings, i’ll happily listen to your feedback and head to the drawing board).

Once you’ve selected a design we’ll get to work on the finer details; materials, proportions, hardware and finishes etc… at which point I’ll normally produce some material samples for you.

PART THREE: SIGN OFF

Once we’ve agreed on a design I’ll produce accurate, scale drawings for your final agreement and sign off.

We then ask for a 50% deposit, which once received enables us to go shopping for your lovely timbers etc...

At this stage you are very welcome to get involved in the timber selection. If your piece demands something special you’d be most welcome to join me in hand selecting from some of Englands finest timber yards. Might sound nerdy but I promise its mega fun.

Throughout the subsequent making process you will be very welcome to visit the workshop and see your piece coming to life.

LAST STAGE: DELIVERY

Once your piece is complete I’ll deliver and install it in its new home.

At this stage I’ll also make sure you know exactly how to look after your new piece and ensure it lasts for generations, to facilitate this, every piece comes with a certificate of authenticity and after care instructions.
