Blockhouse Dining table

This spectacular dining table has been one of our greatest pleasures to make in recent time, a lovely commission bought to our door with an extremely open spec for a spectacular beachfront space.

Made in heavy pip British grown oak, this is a fantastic celebration of English oak and all its wonderful character and defects on show.

We were tasked with designing a sculptural table of real presence, incorporating texture and character throughout. Quite quickly settling on these twin pedestals, heavily carved and with the hole removed creating negative space to excentuate the play of light and shadow across those carved surfaces.

The top was to be a particularly characterful, using heavy pip oak, leaving all the tree’s imperfections and wonderful character on show. We stabilised the larger cracks with handmade and fitted bowties, and filled some of the larger cracks but have worked hard to maintain its essential character whilst celebrating its flaws. We were extremely grateful to our client for endorsing such a process and approach, which throughly enjoy and approve of.

3.5m at its shortest and extending up to a collosal 4.2m long, this extending table was designed to seat 16-18 comfortably. It not only pushed our small workshop to its physical limits, but also provided a wonderful technical challenge.

An entirely bespoke synchronised opening mechanism was designed for this table, using a system of pulleys and heavy duty Chamberlan runners. The extension is easily operated by a single person from one end of the table, with the leaf concealed within the frame of the table, slotting neatly on to bespoke made brass location pins.

This has been a furniture makers dream and definitely one of the projects we are most proud of. Huge in scale, technically challenging throughout and celebrating the very best of homegrown British timbers, its everything we dream of in a commission. Clients like these don’t come along every day so we are thrilled to have been let loose on this one and grateful for their open mind and enthusiasm for our craft.
